It is linked with the American Baptist Churches USA, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, the Alliance of Baptists, the District of Columbia Baptist Convention, and the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists. However, the connection with these churches severed in 2012.
It was founded on 2 June 1862 by Amos Kendall. Kendall donated about $90,000 to help construct the building. The church opened its doors in June 1866, around the time Kendall was made a senior deacon in the church. But within 18 months the building was consumed by fire. Kendall donated another $15,000 to rebuild the building because it was only insured for $50,000.
The church founded the Calvary Womens Services in 1983. It was the first women’s homeless shelter in Washington Metro area. The aim of the Calvary Womens Services is to transform the lives of homeless women in Washington, D.C. through health, employment programs, education, and housing. Furthermore, they make sure that each woman have the educational support they need to take positive steps toward independence and the access to the proper trauma-informed healthcare. The Calvary Womens Services programs included daily addiction recovery meetings personalized case management, life skills and education opportunities, job training, on-site therapy transitional and permanent housing, and health and wellness services.
